If you have a wood-burning appliance, it's essential to know how to optimise its performance. On a basic level, this means using the best type of natural firewood. With vast experience in log sales, and the production and log delivery options of kiln-dried logs and seasoned logs, LJN Firewood supplies customers in Godalming and the surrounding areas with efficient, high-quality fuel.
Below, we explain why it is important to burn hardwood logs, such as beech and birch logs, with a low moisture content. Seasoning and kiln-drying are both methods used to dry logs before sale.
When logs contain a lot of moisture, they produce less heat, more smoke and more harmful emissions. This is bad for your pocket and the environment. In line with this, the lower the moisture content, the hotter and more efficiently your logs will burn, producing more heat with fewer logs.
Ideally, logs should have a moisture content below 20%. For reliable log sales in Godalming and the surrounding areas, call LJN Firewood. We produce kiln-dried logs with a guaranteed wood moisture content of 20% or less. Additionally, we strive for a moisture level of less than 20% in all our seasoned logs.
Since May 2021, all hardwood logs sold for use in domestic heating appliances must have a moisture content of 20% or less. This applies to wood sold in volumes less than 2 cubic metres. Logs for burning should also not exceed 30cm in diameter.
Wood sold in volumes less than 2 cubic metres must have ‘Ready to Burn’ certification. LJN Firewood is proud to be a member of the Woodsure Ltd Ready to Burn scheme, giving you further confidence in our log sales.
Wet, green or unseasoned logs are those which have been cut from live trees and have not been put through a drying process. On the other hand, dry logs have had moisture removed. Our company uses two different methods to effectively remove moisture from wood before selling it to customers.
One of these methods is kiln drying. We place various hardwood logs in a biomass kiln drier to remove excess moisture. Our kiln-dried hardwood logs include:
In addition to kiln-dried hardwood logs, we produced seasoned logs. This involves leaving logs to dry naturally in the air, which can take anything from 6 months to a few years, depending on the type of wood. Some of our customers in the Godalming area prefer to buy logs seasoned in this traditional way.
