While there are many different types of firewood suitable for use in open fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, log burners, campfires and even wood-fired pizza ovens, kiln dried logs are arguably the most efficient. Not only do they burn hotter for longer than unseasoned logs, but they also burn far more cleanly and safely, creating fewer deposits of creosote, tar, soot and ash.
Unlike many other suppliers, we do not purchase our kiln dried logs from across Europe. Every one of the logs is produced onsite at our own yard in Ewhurst, which we make available for purchase to domestic households and local businesses around Cobham, Cranleigh, Godalming, Guildford, Weybridge and the wider Surrey and West Sussex regions.
We have invested over £350,000 to produce the highest quality firewood for our customers. This investment includes the purchase of four biomass kiln driers, which run on a mix of waste wood and sawdust from our firewood and sawmilling production. All the timber we use for the production of kiln dried logs and other types of firewood comes from tree surgery jobs, site clearances and forestry works in the local area, carried out by our sister company LJN Tree Surgery.
This helps to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible whilst making the industry more sustainable.
We take our collection of freshly cut green wood from trees such as Oak, Ash, Birch, Beech, Cherry and Hornbeam and stack them out in the open for around a year. Once the moisture content has dropped to around 30%, we cut the logs into 20cm or 33cm lengths, to suit the needs of our customers in Cobham, Guildford, Weybridge and the surrounding areas.
We then place these cut logs from woodland clearances around places like Cranleigh and Godalming into our biomass kilns. These are, essentially, large ovens that force moisture and water content out of the timber through constant airflow. Sophisticated monitoring sensors and a digital management system helps us to achieve the desired levels of humidity and temperature control. With experts like our personnel operating this technology, an average load will dry out in a couple of days. This duration can vary, depending on the type of wood we are drying, as some require longer than others.
A series of smart systems enables the water to escape, reducing the overall moisture levels to below 20%. For premium grade kiln dried logs which we sell to customers throughout Cobham, Godalming, Guildford and the surrounding areas, this is often less than 10%.
At LJN Firewood, we use cutting-edge technology along with our own experience and knowhow to produce high-quality kiln dried logs. Whatever your wood burning needs, we supply and deliver the best in the business.
