Hardwood Logs in Cranleigh, Leatherhead
and the Surrounding Areas

At LJN Firewood, we have been producing and delivering quality hardwood logs to domestic households and local businesses in Cranleigh, Dorking, Guildford, Leatherhead and the Surrey and West Sussex areas since 2003. Our personnel have generations of shared experience in the industry. When it comes to firewood, there isn’t much that we don’t know. You can trust us when we tell you that, in our professional opinion, kiln-dried hardwood logs are far superior for use as firewood than softwood logs. Naturally, hardwood must undergo some form of drying process before it is suitable for use as fuel in fireplaces, wood-burning stoves and log burners, which is why we use biomass kiln driers to reduce the moisture content of the wood to below 20%.

This produces a clean, efficient burn with minimal smoke.

We produce seasoned logs and hardwood logs at our own yard in Ewhurst, sourced from local site clearance, tree surgery and forestry projects undertaken by our sister company, LJN Tree Surgery, in the neighbouring Cranleigh, Dorking, Leatherhead and Guildford areas. Not only does this keep our carbon footprint low, but it also ensures that we use only work with the best quality timber.

We use the following species of tree for our hardwood logs:

  • Beech

  • Birch

  • Cherry

  • Hornbeam

  • Oak

Beech

A good choice for long-term heating, this dense hardwood offers a clean and intense burn without giving off too many sparks. The smooth, thin layer of bark doesn’t flake off, resulting in less residue after burning. However, it can be difficult to light. we recommend buying kindling and firelighters from LJN Firewood for the best results. Birch

Many firewood sellers in Surrey and West Sussex use over 50% Birch because it is quick growing, cheap to purchase and quick to process and dry. However, it is the fastest burning form of broadleaf wood. We would therefore only use a limited amount to complement superior hardwood logs.

Cherry

This type of wood supplies a decent amount of heat and gives off a pleasant aroma when burned. While Cherry hardwood logs can spark more than others if incorrectly seasoned, we kiln dry them to the highest standard to dramatically minimise this risk.

Hornbeam

This wood burns in a similar fashion to Beech, providing a good amount of heat for fireplaces, stoves and log burners inside Cranleigh, Guildford, Dorking and Leatherhead homes – particularly if using Hornbeam as kiln-dried or seasoned logs.

Oak

This is one of the best types of firewood because its density allows for a long, slow burn which can keep a fire going throughout the night. This is only possible if dried 100% correctly, otherwise it will hiss and tar up. We have invested more than £350,000 in kiln-drying systems which reduce moisture content to around 20% in our hardwood logs and often much less.
